This article outlines the major new threat to Chile’s forests and communities from industry’s plans to dramatically expand industrial tree plantations in Chile.
Excerpt: Large forestry companies, led by Arauco and CMPC, are planning an ambitious expansion of forest monoculture in Chile. The goal, announced by the Chilean Wood Corporation (CORMA) in 2024, is to add an additional million hectares of pine and eucalyptus by 2049. This growth would increase the potential for the spread of mega-fires, water shortages, concentration of land ownership and diminished biodiversity, among many other impacts.
