Projects we've been focused on in 2025 include:

Amplifying voices of Indigenous Peoples and front line communities

  • Produce analysis and reports, accompanied by videos and photos documenting the extreme and violent state repression being experienced by Mapuche people in Wallmapu (Chile) who are organizing to reclaim their ancestral lands from the timber industry
  • Produce monthly Breaking Green Podcasts to lift up the voices and stories of front line communities about the issues they are confronting
  • Build and strengthen alliances with Indigenous Peoples internationally to support efforts to protect and defend their lands

Protecting the Wildness of Forests by preventing the release of genetically engineered American chestnut trees

  • Expose and disrupt the plans of GE tree researchers and their corporate backers to clone and plant millions of GE chestnuts that would forever disrupt the wildness of our forests
  • Build legal strategies to confront the USDA over their refusal to fully review the defective GE American chestnut known as D54
  • Use videos, photos and interviews with experts to highlight the natural comeback of the wild American chestnut to forests throughout the Northeast. Demonstrate that genetically engineereing the American chestnut is not only dangerous, it is completely unnecessary

Defending the rights of Indigenous and traditional communities by stopping GE trees in Brazil and Chile

  • Meet and stategize with Indigenous Peoples fron around Latin America and the world to shut down Suzano corporation’s dreams of GE eucalyptus plantations in Brazil and the Amazon, using the COP30 UN Climate Summit in Brazil as a major rallying point
  • Confront and expose plans by major forestry companies in Chile to use gene edited GE trees to expand their industrial plantations of pine and eucalyptus trees
  • Remove market incentives for corporations to develop GE tree plantations by ensuring the Forest Stewardship Council continues to ban all GE trees, including trees developed with new technologies like gene editing

In 2024, Global Justice Ecology Project (GJEP) achieved remarkable milestones in its mission to protect forests and defend the rights of Indigenous and forest-dependent communities worldwide. From amplifying the struggles of the Mapuche people in Chile to mobilizing against genetically engineered (GE) trees at international forums, GJEP’s work demonstrates the power of solidarity and action in addressing ecological and social injustices. This year’s impact report celebrates over two decades of resistance, resilience, and advocacy—proving that collective action can drive meaningful change for our planet and its people.
