URGENT ACTION – Please send a letter today in solidarity with Brazil’s Landless Workers Movement, Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST)

We kindly urge you to express solidarity with MST in Espírito Santo, Brazil and send an urgent message to the state government of Espírito Santo in order to prevent 200 families from being evicted from a land occupation in a eucalyptus plantation area of the transnational pulp and paper company Suzano.
Benefiting the company, a state judge ordered that the families be evicted, ignoring the fact this land is one among many public lands illegally controlled and utilized by the Suzano company.

Your honourable State Governor,
Yesterday, the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST) in the state of Espírito Santo occupied an area of 8,039 hectares in Jacupemba, located in the municipality of Aracruz, planted with the eucalyptus monoculture by the company Suzano Papel e Celulose.
Although Suzano claims it is the owner of the land, documentation of the National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Land Reform (INCRA), shows that it is public land, in this case, lands that belong to the state of Espírito Santo. It is up to the State government to take back these lands and allocate them to agrarian reform, as is foreseen in the Brazilian legislation.
We are deeply concerned about the situation at this moment. The 200 families that yesterday carried out the peaceful and legitimate occupation of the area are threatened to be evicted by police forces, due to a repossession order issued by the State Justice system. The judge who issued the order accepted Suzano’s claim that the land belongs to the company, even though the facts show that the land is public.
Therefore, we immediately request that the Espírito Santo state government, as the head of the state police, avoids the eviction of the families and establishes a channel for dialogue with the MST and with the families in the occupied area in order to advance, once and for all, in the urgent process of retaking this and other public lands by the state government.
This would open the door for the State to begin to repair a historic injustice by carrying out agrarian land reform on these public lands, so that these lands can finally fulfil their social function.

Exmo. Governador do Estado,
No dia de ontem, o Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) no estado do Espírito Santo ocupou uma área de 8.039 hectares em Jacupemba, no município de Aracruz, plantada com a monocultura de eucalipto da empresa Suzano Papel e Celulose S/A.
Apesar da Suzano afirmar que é a proprietária da terra, documentação do Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária (INCRA) mostra que se trata de terras públicas, sendo terras que pertencem ao estado do Espírito Santo. Cabe ao governo do Estado retomar essas terras e destiná-las à reforma agrária, conforme prevê a legislação brasileira.
Estamos profundamente preocupados com a situação neste momento. As 200 famílias que ontem realizaram a ocupação pacífica e legítima da área estão sendo ameaçadas de despejo por forças policiais, devido a uma ordem de reintegração de posse emitida pela Justiça Estadual. O Juiz em questão aceitou a alegação da empresa Suzano de que seria proprietária da terra, mesmo que os fatos mostrem que a terra é pública.
Por isso, solicitamos, de forma imediata, que o governo do estado do Espírito Santo, enquanto chefe das polícias estaduais, evite o despejo das famílias e estabeleça um canal de diálogo com o MST e com as famílias na área ocupada para avançar, de uma vez por todas, no processo urgente de retomada dessa e de outras terras públicas pelo governo estadual.
Isso abriria as portas para o Estado começar a reparar uma injustiça histórica, realizando a reforma agrária nessas terras públicas para que as mesmas finalmente possam cumprir sua função social.
