The Nicaraguan national police blamed 4 Mayangna Indigenous authorities for the Kiwakumbeih Massacre, which occurred on August 23 2021. On that day, 37 people were attacked, mainly from the Miskitu and Mayangna people. Although the surviving victims indicted that the attack was carried out by a group of non-indigenous settlers, armed with war weapons and speaking Spanish, the Nicaraguan police blamed the Mayangnas.

On April 13, 2023, the IACHR issues precautionary measures because they are being tortured. On June 27, 2023, the Inter-America Court of Huan Rights orders their release. on October 2, 2024, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention orders their release and compensation. The Nicaraguan State fails to comply with its obligations under international law and keeps them arbitrarily and illegally deprived of their freedom.
