International Tree Biotechnology Conference ending in Disarray
Raleigh, NC (U.S.) – The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) biennial Tree Biotechnology Conference is ending today in confusion. The IUFRO conference brought together researchers working on the genetic engineering of trees to share information and resources but the future of the conference is uncertain.
The Campaign to STOP Genetically Engineered Trees, represented by Global Justice Ecology Project came to the event to monitor and analyze the proceedings, and watched the Tree Biotech conference descend into disarray, without confirmation of when or where their next event would be, who would take the top three leadership roles in it, or whether they should continue to use the term “biotechnology” due to its controversial nature.
The Campaign also used the event as an opportunity to meet with local, regional and national environmental, forest protection and environmental justice organizations about ongoing collaboration to prevent the release of genetically engineered trees into the environment.
