Global Justice Ecology Project founders Orin Langelle and Anne Petermann have been fighting the ecological and social destruction of large-scale hydroelectric dams since 1993. GJEP is committed to exposing false solution to climate change such as these dams, that cause vast devastation when they are constructed and flood vast areas of land. Indigenous and rural communities are displaced, ecosystems drowned and enormous quantities of methane emitted from the rotting vegetation. Methane is a greenhouse gas 30x more potent than CO2.
In Colombia, there is an unprecedented environmental and humanitarian crisis taking place due to a massive hydroelectric dam that is literally falling apart, threatening thousands of families. ENVIRONMENTAL AND HUMANITARIAN DISASTER IN COLOMBIA – PLEASE DONATE!

Located in Antioquia department in Colombia, Hidroituango hydropower dam is the biggest infrastructure project currently under implementation in the country. Since April 28 it has been mired with serious technical failures that have caused overflooding of the Cauca river, generating an emergency that is threatening the lives, homes, means of production and livelihoods of thousands of families.
Hundreds of families in several municipalities have already been forced to relocate, and most of them have their basic needs –including for food, shelter and medical and psycho-social healthcare—unattended, in addition to the material losses they are enduring. In Puerto Valdivia district, more than 50 homes have collapsed, 3 bridges have been destroyed, the local school is damaged and the healthcare center has been washed away as well.
On May 16, the dam’s engines-house collapsed, generating a new emergency that the public utilities company EPM acknowledged it could not control. The dam’s engines were being used to remove the accumulated excess water, and their breakdown forced the authorities to issue a new evacuation alert and declare Antioquia a disaster zone. In an official letter to Colombia’s president Santos, those responsible for the hydropower project request him to adopt all the measures at hand to avoid an aggravation of the situation, given that an “uncontrolled technical event” has occurred.
The worst possible scenario and threat is the potential cracking of the dam’s wall, the collapse of which would result in a disaster of unknown dimensions. Six municipalities in Antioquia are currently under alert, along with several others in Cordoba, Sucre and Bolivar departments.
The prospects we are facing are of thousands of displaced families, several towns destroyed, and an environmental disaster of unthinkable dimensions, with hundreds of people threatened to life. EPM estimates 120,000 people are at risk, even though the area is more highly populated.
The general atmosphere is one of fear, hopelessness and desolation.

El proyecto hidroeléctrico Hidroituango en el departamento de Antioquia, es la obra de infraestructura más grande que se ejecuta actualmente en el país. Desde el 28 de abril presenta serias fallas técnicas que han generado una emergencia por el desbordamiento del río Cauca, poniendo en riesgo la vida, viviendas , medios de producción y trabajo de miles de familias.
Dicha situación obligó el desplazamiento de cientos de familias de varios municipios, la mayoría de las cuales se encuentran sin atención de necesidades básicas de alimentación, alojamiento o atención medica y psico-social, además de las perdidas materiales. En el corregimiento de Puerto Valdivia se cuentan más de 50 viviendas perdidas, 3 puentes destruidos, la escuela afectada y el puesto de salud arrasado también.
El día de ayer, 16 de Mayo, se derrumbó la casa de máquinas de la represa, por medio de la cual se estaba tratando de evacuar el agua acumulada, generando una nueva emergencia que la empresa EPM reconoció no poder controlar. Esto obligó a una nueva alerta de evacuación y fue declarada la calamidad pública en Antioquia; en misiva oficial al Presidente de la República los responsables del proyecto, le solicitan tomar todas las medidas para evitar que la situación se agrave, en vista de una “situación técnica no controlada”.
El escenario de mayor riesgo proyectado es la fractura del muro de la represa, cuya avalancha provocaría una catástrofe de dimensiones no estimadas. Hoy la alerta se extiende a 6 municipios de Antioquia, y otros más de los departamentos de Córdoba, Sucre y Bolívar.
Virtualmente nos enfrentamos a miles de familias desplazadas, a varios poblados destruidos, y a un desastre ecológico de dimensiones impensables. Está en riesgo la vida de cientos de personas, EPM estima riesgo para 120.000, siendo que la población en la región es más elevada.
El ambiente en la zona es de temor, desesperanza y desconsuelo.
Así, por medio de esta comunicación hacemos un llamado a todas las personas, organizaciones nacionales e internacionales para que expresen su solidaridad y apoyen mediante donaciones al Movimiento Ríos Vivos y a todas las comunidades desplazadas y las que se encuentran en riesgo.

CATASTROPHE ÉCOLOGIQUE ET HUMANITAIRE EN COLOMBIE – DEMANDE DE DONS
Le barrage hydroélectrique Hidroituango, dans le département d’Antioquia, est l’ouvrage d’infrastructure le plus grand en cours d’exécution dans le pays. Depuis le 28 avril, de graves défauts techniques ont provoqué une situation d’urgence à cause du débordement du fleuve Cauca, qui a mis en danger la vie, les maisons, les moyens de production et le travail de milliers de familles.
Cette situation a provoqué le déplacement de centaines de familles de plusieurs municipalités, dont la plupart se retrouvent sans l’essentiel en matière d’alimentation, d’hébergement et ’assistance médicale et psychosociale, sans parler des pertes matérielles. Dans le village de Puerto Valdivia on dénombre plus de 50 maisons disparues, 3 ponts détruits, l’école endommagée et le dispensaire
dévasté.
Le 16 mai, la salle des machines du barrage, où l’on essayait d’évacuer l’eau accumulée, s’est effondrée. L’entreprise EPM a avoué qu’elle ne pouvait pas contrôler ce nouveau désastre. Il a fallu donner une nouvelle alerte d’évacuation et l’état de catastrophe a été déclaré en Antioquia. Dans une lettre adressée au Président de la République, les responsables du projet lui demandent de prendre toutes les mesures nécessaires pour éviter que la situation ne s’aggrave, en raison d’une « situation technique non contrôlée ».
Le scénario le plus dangereux est celui de la fracture du mur du barrage, dont l’écroulement provoquerait une catastrophe de dimensions non estimées. L’état d’alerte s’étend aujourd’hui sur 6 municipalités d’Antioquia et sur d’autres des départements de Córdoba, Sucre et Bolívar.
Nous sommes virtuellement confrontés à des milliers de familles déplacées, à plusieurs villages détruits et à un désastre écologique d’une portée inimaginable.
L’EPM estime que 120 000 personnes sont en danger, du fait que la population de la région est nombreuse.
La crainte, le désespoir et le chagrin règnent dans la région.
C’est pourquoi nous appelons toutes les personnes et organisations nationales internationales à manifester leur solidarité et à aider de leurs dons le Mouvement Ríos Vivos, toutes les communautés déplacées ou celles qui sont en danger.
