An Indigenous man with his mouth covered by a UNFCCC gag protests the 2007 U.N. climate conference in Bali, Indonesia. The gag symbolizes the exclusion of Indigenous delegates from a meeting with the group’s executive secretary the day before.

The April/May 2022 issue of The Progressive Magazine features a photo essay, United Nations, United Opposition, by GJEP’s Orin Langelle in their On The Line section.

“We know we are in a climate catastrophe. The response coming from the United Nations and countries throughout the world is not adequate to address the problem. Yet the U.N. climate conferences are a proper forum for one thing—protests against the status quo, as I have documented through my photographs.” – Orin Langelle

Since 1909, The Progressive has aimed to amplify voices of dissent and those under-represented in the mainstream, with a goal of championing grassroots progressive politics.
