GJEP was quoted in an important article in The Guardian yesterday addressing efforts to restore the American Chestnut and the dangers posed by the GE American chestnut.
Here is the quote they used from our recent press release:
“This isn’t a restoration project, it’s a genetically flawed science experiment poised for commercialization at the expense of our forests,” said Anne Petermann, co-founder of Global Justice Ecology Project. “We are appalled that the USDA is seriously considering approving this risky GE tree when they know it is based on 10 years of flawed research and has exhibited severe problems in controlled field tests.
“The forests deserve real science, not flawed experiments. The American chestnut deserves restoration, not commodification.”
Sign on to stop the GE chestnut!
Help us stop the USDA from charging ahead with plans to approve the defective, genetically engineered D54 American chestnut tree for unregulated release into our forests.
This reckless decision threatens to derail the remarkable comeback of the wild American chestnut — a vital native tree fighting its way back after nearly a century of devastation.
Even scientists who once supported this line of GE trees are now withdrawing their backing, calling the D54 “unfit for restoration.”
This is failed science — and we must stop it before it’s too late.
Please sign on to our letter to the USDA demanding they reject the petition to release this defective, flawed GE tree into our forests!
