In 1993, photographer and GJEP co-founder Orin Langelle traveled to Cree territory in northern Quebec with Anne Petermann on a month-long fact-finding mission to document resistance against Hydro-Quebec’s mega dam projects. From Chisasibi to Whapmagoostui (Great Whale), they bore witness to the devastating impacts of colonial development on the land, water, wildlife, and Cree communities.
In this episode, Orin shares the powerful story behind a single photograph: a parked car turned protest sign in Chisasibi. But this image is just one thread in a much larger tapestry of resistance—from flooded burial grounds and drowned caribou to international days of action that eventually helped put the Great Whale Project on ice.
