Earth Minute: GMO Labeling
On January 1, 2022, the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) new law took effect requiring genetically modified (GM) foods to be identified as “bioengineered,” a move that further muddles consumer understanding of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
The USDA now requires genetically engineered or GMO foods to be labelled as “bioengineered foods.” QR codes and options to text or call for more information are now considered acceptable forms of identification, which may lead to consumers missing the label altogether.
According to EcoWatch, “the burden is placed on the consumer to take extra steps, like scanning a code or calling a phone number, just to determine what they are buying. Many people do not have access to the technology these new disclosures may require.”
Rather than provide clear and transparent on-package GMO labeling, this law misleads and deceives consumers, while protecting the agro-chemical and biotech industry.
