GJEP and Biofuelwatch visited Chile and Wallmapu (Mapuche territory) with the support of the digital media platform Resumen during the month of April 2024.
During this visit into the field we confirmed, through the aerial images obtained by Resumen, that destructive clearcut logging continues to be practiced extensively throughout the territories of Wallmapu. Clearcutting is a technique that destroys diverse ecosystems, decreases biodiversity and increases the risk of soil erosion. This practice is another precedent for the negative impacts of the forestry industry in Chile and Wallmapu, despite this industry’s attempts to greenwash its image and present itself as an environmental leader. The images here were taken in the communes of Quillón (Ñuble Region) and Curanilahue (Arauco Province) of holdings belonging to Arauco.

Biofuelwatch and GJEP visited Chile and Wallmapu (Mapuche territory) with the support of the digital media platform Resumen during the month of April 2024.
During this visit we confirmed, through aerial images obtained by Resumen, the negative impacts of the pulp industry in the territory. We visited the largest pulp mill in Chile, the MAPA project, by Celulosa Arauco, which produces 2.1 million tons of pulp per year. We were able to observe the large amount of emissions into the atmosphere that this industry generates. In addition, we confirmed the poor state of the industrial infrastructure of Arauco allied companies such as Andina Ingredients, a turpentine distillation facility which represents a horrific toxic threat for the ecosystems and communities in the area.

On this visit we met with the mayor of Curanilahue, a small rural city in the Province of Arauco. She showed us the reality of thousands of residents in her community, who literally do not have space to build their homes. This occurs because in the commune of Curanilahue 80% of the land ownership is in the hands of the large forestry companies. It is for this reason that various families and neighborhoods have organized to take over and recover land, where they remove the monoculture plantations and have built their houses. This is a reflection of another one of the serious problems of the forestry industry in Chile and Wallmapu: the hyper-concentration of land ownership in the hands of a few forestry companies.

Biofuelwatch and GJEP visited Chile and Wallmapu (Mapuche territory) with the support of the digital media platform Resumen during the month of April 2024.
We had the opportunity to learn from and share experiences with residents of the San Ramón sector (Quillón Commune, Ñuble Region), which were severely affected by the large forest fires of 2023 in Chile. During our visit the neighbors told us about the responsibility of the large forestry companies in the enormous fires, due to the lack of firebreaks, the poor management of forest slash from clearcut logging, and the extension of the monoculture plantations within a few meters of their homes. The community of San Ramón is seeking to sue the company Bosques Arauco, which they say is the main responsible party. Currently, this company maintains extensive monoculture plantations and a pulp mill called Nueva Aldea in the area where the communities continue to make their homes and livelihoods.

On this visit we participated in a discussion at the University of Concepción that addressed the complex panorama that the country and the world is experiencing around the impacts of the exotic tree species monoculture plantation model. National and international presentations were made in an activity called: Global perspective and community strategies against forest extractivism in south-central Chile. In the event, GJEP and Biofuelwatch made a presentation and forged alliances with organizations in the Biobio region such as the Network to Overcome the Forestry Model – la Red de Superación del Modelo Forestal.

Biofuelwatch and GJEP visited Chile and Wallmapu (Mapuche territory) with the support of the digital media platform Resumen during the month of April 2024.
On this visit we learned about the experiences of Mapuche communities in the area of Tirúa, one of the epicenters of the Mapuche resistance struggles in Wallmapu. We were able to observe how communities are fighting against forestry companies and the plantation model by carrying out actions for the recovery of territory. As a part of these actions many community members have taken out pine and eucalyptus plantations, while planting varieties of super foods such as quinoa or amaranth.
