Global Justice Ecology Project sent a delegation to Chile from October 6-20 to investigate and document the political repression against Mapuche Indigenous people resisting the pulp and timber industries and working to reclaim their ancestral lands stolen for industrial plantations of eucalyptus and pine.
One of the delegation’s first stops was the prison in Temuco, Chile where they interviewed Mapuche political prisoners about this state-sanctioned repression, which includes arrests without evidence, languishing in prison for up to two years without a trial, and virtual-only court hearings where they are not allowed to be in the courtroom with their attorney.
Following the meeting inside the prison, GJEP held a press conference outside of the prison along with relatives of the political prisoners. The press conference was aired on Bio Bio Radio, the largest news outlet in the region.
