May 24, 2023

A year ago today, on May 24, 2023, we were at the MST Agroecology school in Espirito Santo, Brazil, for a presentation from the school leadership.

Along with the Campaign to STOP GE Trees, we brought people from Argentina, Canada, Chile, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, and the US to Brazil to develop plans for the international campaign to stop the development and commercial release of genetically engineered trees, and to support and highlight opposition to pulp company Suzano’s ongoing expansion of industrial eucalyptus plantations and potential use of genetically engineered eucalyptus trees modified to tolerate toxic herbicides. May 1990

May 24th is also the day Judi Bari was blown up by a pipe bomb placed under the seat of her car, which she believed was done because of her very effective work to unite workers and environmentalists in the battle to save the last of the ancient redwoods.  This occurred in 1990, just before the launch of a major national campaign called Redwood Summer. GJEP co-founder Anne Petermann attended Redwood Summer for around 4-6 weeks and did jail support for arrested activists there.
