PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW!

Sign on to this letter calling on the Mongolian authorities to release imprisoned environmental and human rights defender Beejin Khastumur.

Beejin Khastumur is the founder of Mongolian non-profit organisation Delhiin Mongol Nogoon Negdel (DMNN), an organisation that has exposed many violations of Mongolia’s environmental laws by foreign and domestic mining companies. As a result of their work, Beejin and other DMNN members have been physically assaulted and received death threats from both state actors and mining company employees in recent months.

Beejin has been imprisoned in Gants Khudag detention centre since 16th March 2016 for a crime there is no evidence of him committing. Given the highly unusual circumstances surrounding his arrest, Beejin’s colleagues at DMNN strongly suspect that their leader has been unfairly imprisoned as a result of his work to expose illegal mining operations.

Beejin suffers from high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease and our friends at DMNN say his health is deteriorating rapidly in prison.

The situation is urgent- Please sign on to the letter and call for Beejin’s immediate release.

The deadline for sign on is April 2nd 2016. To sign on, please contact Hannibal Rhoades at ha******@ga*****.org with your name, job title/position and your organisation’s name.

Supporters are also encouraged to send a polite letter directly to Mongolian authorities immediately calling for:

1. The immediate and unconditional release Mr. Beejin Khastumur;

2. An immediate, thorough and impartial investigation into the events leading to Beejin Khastumur’s arrest, with a view to publishing the results and bringing those responsible to justice in accordance with international standards;

3. The necessary medical treatment to be provided for Mr. Beejin Khastumur;

4. The Mongolian authorities to guarantee that, in all circumstances, human rights and environmental activists in Mongolia are able to carry out their legitimate activities without fear of reprisals.
